Description
This photo captures the beautiful Linwood Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia in black and white. It is a medium sized historical cemetery which makes it easier to explore than the larger historical cemeteries. It also makes it easier to take photographs as many beautiful tombstones are closed to each other.
Historic Linwood Cemetery is an outdoor museum of 19th century stone carvings. Many monuments in the cemetery are signed by the artisans who carved them. Some of the carvers were local and had businesses in Columbus, but some had national fame.
In 1828, when Columbus first began, its residents were buried exclusively in Linwood Cemetery. Some notables buried here are Dr. John S. Pemberton, inventor of Coca Cola, Gen. Henry L. Benning, for whom Fort Benning is named, & Augusta Howard, founder of Georgia's Women Suffrage Association. Strolling among the elaborate monuments, the old worn tablets, the crumbling brick walls, the simple stones and slabs, one is able to read carved in stone the history of the city and the region.
Historic Linwood Foundation is dedicated to preserving history through restoration and conservation efforts. Tours available on request. Cemetery open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Foundation office is open, M-T, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 706-321-8285 for information. Brochures are available in the Columbus RVIC and VIC Centers.
