This photo captures the beautiful tombstones in St. Louis Cemetery No.1, New Orleans. I love to visit historical cemeteries. It was in cemetery I first discovered the beauty of stone carving! I still remember fondly the cemetery near my college dormitory where Greek, Italian and Jewish immigrants built monuments for their dead.
Saint Louis Cemetery is the name of three Roman Catholic cemeteries in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most of the graves are above-ground vaults constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Cemeteries No. 1 and No. 2 are included on the National Register of Historic Places and the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail.
